Downtown Chicago Wedding - What is a Second Shooter and Do I Need One?

As I begin this blogging adventure, I thought it might be a nice idea to start answering some frequently asked questions. Something I’m asked frequently is “do I need a second shooter?” My answer: it depends. There are a lot of variables to consider such as the number of guests, wedding logistics, etc. When I answer my clients, I usually say if you have under 200 guests and your getting ready locations are relatively close, you don’t need one. If you want photos of both the bride and groom getting ready and you’re getting ready in locations on complete opposite ends of town - you may want to consider hiring a second shooter.

Now, what exactly is a second shooter? A second shooter is an assistant photographer hired by your lead photographer, they capture a bit of what’s going on behind the scenes, lots of candid shots, details, cocktail hour, etc. The second shooter fills in wherever the lead cannot and is generally of a similar style and is usually a lead on their own. A second shooter could also be an intern looking to learn more about the wedding industry (but has been thoroughly vetted by your professional. I’ve taken on second shooters who are individuals who have approached me just asking to shadow me for the day. It’s fun for me to show them the ropes and help them build a portfolio too.)

Here’s a handful of shots from Kiara + Rachel’s wedding, I worked as a second shooter for my dear friend Adam. He and I often work together whenever possible tag-teaming weddings where second shooters are needed.
